Lake Superior rocks

Lake Superior rocks... all found on a beach near Copper Harbor, MI that was completely deserted except for the five of us rock hounding. The lake was wild - surf pounding away - and the beach consisted either of rocks (these were too big to be called pebbles) or rock outcroppings. Its on my list of places to go back to and experiences to repeat. The only thing missing was a picnic lunch and warmer clothes - we were driven to seek shelter and sustenance too soon.

When we were up there, we decided to visit the Agate Lady in Grand Marais, MI. Being the professional, she was unimpressed with my select treasures. Meg found her dismissal highly amusing - something about an unorganized quartz blob. Cruising through the Gitche Gumee Museum's curiosity cabinet of historical fishing artifacts and agates from all over the world was a romp from bright shiny object to bright shiny object.

As I sit here writing to you at work - I realize that my desk at work is quite crowded with bits and pieces of the natural world. The hoarder in me says (albeit softly) ...what cool rocks and fossils could we collect in Senegal? more pretties to find ...

Work is well work - full of the wrong type of bits. I am embracing Fall though with a mission to cook at least one meal a week for Dave. This week it was Eve Aronoff's Chicken Noodle Soup and home-made baguettes. I still struggle with bread - I get a good crust and the center is spongey and too moist. Growing up on Z's bread, my kids are tough to please. I get 'nice try, mom' more often than not. Next week I will try again with Craig Common's Three Onion Soup.

Meg and I bought Lily's birthday present yesterday at Catching Fireflies in Ann Arbor. I hope she has as much fun unwrapping her treasures as we had picking them out. This year I am determined that she will be able to open them on time even if she is all the way across the Atlantic. Do you remember the last time we posted a birthday greeting to Lily on this blog?
